Weekly notes related to explorations, workout and family

Explorations

I have been fascinated with model fine-tuning for few months now. Started to locally train and run the GPT-2 detector. Cursor help me setup and run the training for the detection. The repo uses RoBERTa (an optimized BERT variant) as the base model and the script fine-tunes the model to classify text as either human-written or AI-generated. The training is time-consuming but will consider the first legit use for the GPU cores on my laptop.

Family

Dad was hospitalized for 4 days last week for small bowel obstruction. It was his second hospitalization for small bowel obstruction, the last time was in August 2023. In the last 14 odd months, I have now spent close to 18-20 nights in hospitals. I must confess that I have garnered immense respect to the medical staff in the hospital and the fragility of long-term planning and life. Instead of just thinking in terms of longevity or a lifespan, consciously working towards improving the quality of the last 10-15 years of life (health-span) should become a daily priority in your 40s.

Workout

I sneaked a mix of resistance training workouts and long walks to do an average 10k steps during the day while my mom would attend dad at the hospital. While I did go a bit easy on the workouts due to lack of sleep, I could easily cover the steps indoors at the hospital and a nearby park during wait times.
